Shift in Shipping Alliance Membership Could Prove Beneficial for Shippers

The alliance changes and uncertainty that this will create in 2025 could lead to rates decline as each carrier gets jittery and starts focusing on market share.

  • The 2M Alliance (Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company) has been dissolved.
  • THE Alliance (Hapag-Lloyd, HMM, Ocean Network Express, and Yang Ming) will lose Hapag-Lloyd.
  • Ocean Alliance (CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen, and OOCL) extend the cooperation until 2032.
  • Gemini Cooperation (Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd) will start the partnership in 2025.
  • MSC will operate independently in pursuit of its integrator strategy.

Domination of the East-West network will be Ocean Alliance with 40 services in all trade lanes apart from the transatlantic. Gemini Cooperation will have 21 services. THE Alliance will have 19 services. MSC will have 15 services.  Pundits hope that this will also lead to more reliable transit times – which is one of the mainstays apparently of the Gemini Corporation.
